Video Camera Doesn't Work During GameChat

Follow these steps if you are unable to share your video camera feed during GameChat on Nintendo Switch 2.

Note

  • Typical USB video cameras should work with Nintendo Switch 2, but compatibility cannot be guaranteed. We recommend using the Nintendo Switch 2 camera (sold separately) for the optimal experience.

  • For users under the age of 16, Parental Controls must be set to use GameChat. Through the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app for smart devices, parents can choose whether to grant permission for a child's use of the camera in each GameChat session or to disable camera usage entirely.

  • If these Parental Controls are set for your user, have your parent/guardian check which setting they applied.

What to do

  • Restart the console.

  • Check for any available Nintendo Switch 2 system updates.

  • Disconnect the camera from the Nintendo Switch 2 console or dock and then connect it again. If you are using the dock, try a different USB port.

    • When you connect a compatible camera, the message "A camera has been connected" will appear briefly in the top-left corner of the screen. When it is disconnected, the message "The camera has been disconnected" will appear.

  • If you are using the Nintendo Switch 2 camera or any other camera that includes a privacy shutter, ensure that the privacy shutter is currently open.

    • On the Nintendo Switch 2 camera, the privacy shutter covers the lens with a light-coloured film. The privacy shutter can be opened by gently turning the outer rim of the camera clockwise.

  • If you are using the Nintendo Switch 2 camera, check for firmware updates:

    • Select System Settings from the HOME Menu.

    • Select Controllers & Accessories.

    • Scroll down and select Update Nintendo Switch 2 Camera.

  • Test the camera through System Settings:

    • Select System Settings from the HOME Menu.

    • Select Controllers & Accessories.

    • Scroll down and select Test USB Camera.

    • If the camera is working properly, you should see a video feed. The Nintendo Switch 2 camera also has a green LED near the lens that indicates when it is in use.

  • Test your network connection. If network connectivity is limited while using GameChat, video camera usage may be temporarily disabled.

  • In a GameChat session, check the camera settings and try adjusting the field of view or zoom level.

Situation not resolved

If you are using the Nintendo Switch 2 camera and are unable to get it to display using these steps, it will need to be returned for assessment. Please contact us for further assistance.

If you are using any other USB camera, please try using another USB camera to see if it is compatible.
