How to Change GameChat Settings Using the GameChat Menu

Follow these steps to adjust settings that apply to your GameChat sessions.

Note:

For users under the age of 16, a parent or guardian may need to be involved to change some of these settings.

Before you start

If you have not gone through first-time setup for GameChat yet, you'll need to follow those steps before you can change these settings.

Complete these steps

Select the setting you'd like to change.

Settings you can adjust while not in a GameChat session

For steps to approve or revoke approval for chatting, please see How to Manage Approved-Friend Settings for GameChat.

Press the C Button or select the GameChat icon from the HOME Menu.
Select your user.
Select Settings.
Toggle the "Mute Microphone When Entering a Chat Session" setting on or off as desired. When enabled, you will need to unmute yourself to begin talking after joining a GameChat session.

Press the C Button or select the GameChat icon from the HOME Menu.
Select your user.
Select Settings.
Select Consent to GameChat Data Processing. Here you can review the Terms of Use or withdraw your consent to the terms.
- Please note that if you do not accept the GameChat terms, you will not be able to use this service.

Settings aimed at specific users in your current GameChat session

Press the C Button to open the GameChat menu.
Select the icon for the function you want to toggle:
- The video camera icon will turn your video camera feed on or off if you have connected a compatible USB camera (sold separately). You can change how much of the video is displayed to others through the camera settings below. For users under the age of 16, a parent or guardian must approve camera usage for each chat.
- The microphone icon will mute or unmute your microphone.
- The screen with an arrow icon will start or stop sharing your game screen to others in the session. Screen sharing is automatically disabled in some situations.

Press the C Button to open the GameChat menu.
Select one of the users in the session.
Select Expand Game Screen.
When you want to return to your own screen, press the B Button.

Press the C Button to open the GameChat menu.
Select one of the users in the session.
Select Profile.
You can review the user's play history, how and when you became friends, mark them as a best friend, delete them from your friend list or block them.
- Deleting a user from your friend list or blocking them while in a GameChat session with that user may remove you from the session.

Press the C Button to open the GameChat menu.
Select one of the users in the session.
Select Options.
You can adjust a volume slider for that user's voice volume or toggle whether their shared screen displays for you.
- When another user's screen sharing is turned off from your side, the message "The game screen is currently set not to display" will be shown.

Other settings you can adjust while in a GameChat session

Press the C Button to open the GameChat menu.
Select the Settings icon.
Select Display.
You can pick from "Standard", "Expand Main Screen", or "Full-Screen". If you select full-screen, you can also choose to display or hide the names of active speakers in a specific corner of your screen.

Press the C Button to open the GameChat menu.
Select the Settings icon.
Select Audio.
You can set whether to mute your microphone when entering a chat session and whether to automatically adjust the game volume while others are talking.
You can also jump directly to Audio in the System Settings.

Press the C Button to open the GameChat menu.
Select the Settings icon.
Select Camera.
You can select a camera field of view from three different options: face-only view, focused view (no surroundings) and full camera view.
- If you are under the age of 16, a parent or guardian can set which field of view options are available for you to pick from.
You can also zoom the camera in further.

Press the C Button to open the GameChat menu.
Select the Settings icon.
Select Share Game Screen.
You can toggle whether to disable your screen share when you are on the HOME Menu to avoid sharing what software you have.

Press the C Button to open the GameChat menu.
Select the Settings icon.
Select Accessibility.
You can toggle whether to display speech as text, which transcribes all users' speech into a chat box at the side of your main screen, as well as whether to allow sending text as voiced audio for other users.
You can also jump to the System Settings to change the language that each of these features is set to (defaulting to your system language), as well as choose from two voice types for sending text as speech.
